Top 8 beauty trends of 2022

Wondering what’s hot off the press in the beauty industry? We’ve scouted out ten of the best health and beauty trends to try out this year.

From slugging (which doesn’t involve the slimy creature) to skinimalism, discover all the latest trends in the industry and find out all you need to know before you give them a go.

1. Skinimalism

Whether you’re on Tiktok or you’re a fan of beauty mags, you’ve probably heard of skinimalism. But what is this exactly?

Essentially, skinimalism is the concept of minimalising your skincare – from your routine to the products you use.

With this trend, less is more. This includes your makeup too, with a real focus on ensuring your base is looking as fresh as possible to achieve that ‘clean girl’ beauty look.

2. Beauty from the inside-out

Wellness has become a huge trend over the past couple of years – and it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon.

With many people incorporating wellness into their lifestyle – and it extends to your skin too.

When you’re taking care of yourself, by staying hydrated, eating your fruits and veggies and getting enough sleep, your skin will thank you. And a lot of people are clocking onto this realisation, which is why it’s becoming a key trend.

3. Sun-protection

Most of us understand the importance of protecting our skin from the sun, but can you honestly say it’s something you think about every day?

Much like skinimalism, sun-protection as a trend focuses on long-term beauty, rather than short-term, surface-level trends or products.

More and more people are making sure they’re consistently using SPF, even during the winter months.

But that’s not all. It also has to be a high-quality SPF so that you’re getting both UVA and UVB protection. This is because exposure to UV rays enters your skin cells and upset the intricate processes involved in your skin’s growth and appearance.

Mineral sun creams offer protection from both UVA and UVB rays, but often use fewer ingredients, which makes them more suitable as skincare for sensitive skin or people who want to use clean beauty.

They help protect the skin by absorbing UV light and transforming it into heat, while simultaneously absorbing radiation, then deflecting it.

Our latest innovation provides protection that absorbs easily into the skin. And as it has been made with mineral filters it means this doesn’t harm coral reefs; so you’re looking after your skin and the local sea life.

4. Heatless curls

Another trend that is picking up momentum is heatless curls. With so many new devices popping up on the market, styling your hair without heat has never been easier.

But why go to the effort of doing heatless curls when you could just use a curling wand or your straighteners?

How to get heatless curls

Fancy giving it a go? It might be worth trying the dressing gown tie trick first – yes you heard us right! Here’s how to do it:

1. Simply spray your hair with a little water.

2. Take the tie from your dressing gown and place it on the middle of your crown with the sides flopping on your shoulders.

3. Clip the tie at the top of your hair to keep it in place.

4. Take the front section of your hair and wrap it around the tie.

5. Repeat with the back section of your hair until it reaches the end of the tie.

6. Secure both sides with a bobble and leave to set.

7. Once set for at least an hour, gently unravel the twists, give your curls a shake, and voila!

5. Technology for skincare

In a world ruled by technology, it makes sense that technology for skincare is becoming a thing too.

In the physical sense, devices such as LED face masks have been increasing in popularity, as well as light therapy lamps, facial steamers and gua sha tools.

But that’s not all. Apps using artificial intelligence are also being developed and released as we speak, meaning it could recognise any skin issues you may be experiencing and provide recommendations on how to support it.

6. Skincare supplements

In a similar vein to the beauty from within trend, skincare supplements are also trending, taking the internet by storm.

But what sorts of ingredients do these supplements contain? They can vary from collagen and biotin, to CBD, Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.

So keep your eyes peeled for more of these products becoming available.

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology trialled the use of a skin supplement containing antioxidant vitamins, trace minerals, and a variety of amino acids and essential fatty acids, and concluded that it had both appearance and functional benefits.

7. Fermented ingredients

If you’re clued up on gut health, you might be aware of the benefits that fermented ingredients can have on your digestive system.

But did you know that they can offer some benefits for your skin too? That’s why more and more companies in the beauty industry are creating skincare products with these fermented ingredients in.

Why the sudden interest in these ingredients then? New research has shown that in animals and humans, topical probiotics have demonstrated promise.4

Plus, both soy and red ginseng have been proven to offer more skin benefits when fermented.5,6

8. Honourable mention: Sustainable beauty

And last but by no means least, we couldn’t write about 2022 trends in cosmetics without mentioning sustainability.

This is becoming a super important factor for consumers when purchasing beauty products, with people considering things like refillable packaging options, recyclable packaging, less plastic use and planet-friendly ingredients.
